We have all heard saying before, “A building is as good as foundation it is on”. While people often use this saying in regards to non-construction related things, it obviously applies just as well to actual construction foundations! Before anything sort of construction can get started on a job site, an excavation contractor has to come through and help the team prepare the ideal foundation for the building.

There is much more that goes into creating a foundation than just digging up the ground to pour concrete; factors such as the environment, soil quality, and soil slope must all be taken into consideration before any ground is broken for construction!

What Goes Into a Foundation?

Before a contractor can even think about digging up ground, there a few steps that must be taken to ensure that the foundation building process goes as smoothly as humanly possible. Two important processes both take place before getting started on the foundation: site clearing and land grading.

Site clearing is as simple as it sounds, vegetation, underbrush, trees and debris must be thoroughly moved from the area before any digging is able to take place. After the site clearing is complete, the excavation contractor will go ahead and move on to step two of the process: site grading. Site grading has to do with drainage and slopes, an improperly graded area will have water flowing towards the building and the foundation! This spells trouble for the foundation, as pooling water can cause cracks and damages to quickly appear in the foundation, causing a rippling effect across the structure!

After all this preliminary work has been put to bed, your contractor can begin digging and breaking ground for your foundation installation! A quality foundation will provide the construction team the perfect base to begin building your structure.
